November 9, 2006 The Skating Hornblower
I saw something today that made me smile. Along Kelly Drive, there was a man rollerblading while playing a horn. (It looked like some sort of baritone.) Just by himself… skating along between the river and the road… playing on the baritone horn. Sure, why not?
Things like that remind me why I love living in the city, where eccentricity is so much more tolerated.

It might have been a Euphonium, though in America there is little to distinguish a Baritone from a Euphonium. Although I like the word Euphonium better, I believe that I played “baritone,” briefly as 2nd chair, in high school- in the bass clef and I STILL want a marching baritone/euphonium or a Flugelhorn capable of the bass clef…or I could just pick up my Trombone and relearn THAT.
However, even if I was to learn myself more about music and such, I doubt I’d ever be a truly capable trumpet player, even if I was to (re)familiarize myself with a Baritone or Euphonium, trumpet style instrument.
I don’t miss playing the tuba, though since that was the easiest instrument to play that I’ve ever tried, I think I could pick it up and give it a try if the need should arise.
I almost regret quitting marching band when I did. (But then I wouldn’t have frequented Noone’s on Friday nights. and Nevermind what it would have done to my COLLEGE career.)
